France,  Montpellier ArtFx (Montpellier),  CG / FX,  June 26, 2015
I'm Nicolas Sauval and I'm a vfx student in ArtFx (France).
It's been five years that I'm passionate by Visual Effects. I begin in a school called IIM in Paris where I discovered all the different aspects of the 3D and Visual Effects. I worked two years in 3Ds Max and after that I moved to ArtFx in Montpellier. It's been 2 and a half year that I am in ArtFx now. I had translate the knowledge that I had in 3ds Max to Maya and I improve my skills as a generalist. ArtFx help me to work on my eye and my vision of the industry. For this final year, i'm student specialist in Fx. I am available for every team working on short film in production this year at ArtFx to help them in my speciality.

Description of the shots

1 ( 0:04 - 0:07 ) : - 3Dsmax / FumeFx / After Effect

I do this test after I saw a tutorial of VideoCopilot, I really wanted to do this explosion to confirm my FumeFx skills before I switch to Maya.

2 ( 0:08 -0:10 ) : - Maya / After Effect / Element 3D

This turn around was done in After Effect with the plugin Element 3D 1.6.

3 ( 0:10 - 0:13 ) : - Maya

This is a wireframe of the 3D model of a Mazda RX8 Redbull ( that I've done to prepare a workshop in Element 3D.

4 ( 0:13 - 0:18 ) : - After Effect / Element 3D

All the shot was done in After Effect except the modeling of the car and the texture of the background. The main inspiration for this workshop was the menu of the video game Colin McRae Dirt3 (

5 ( 0:18 - 0:22 ) : - Realflow

Preview of the next shot in Realflow. Core in Bleu, Foam in Yellow and Splash in Red.

6 ( 0:22 - 0:24 ) : - Maya / Realflow / After Effect

This is a simulation done in Realflow and rendered with Arnold in Maya.

7 ( 0:24 - 0:28 ) : - Maya / FumeFx / Realflow / Houdini / Arnold / After Effect

This shot was done for the Riot Challenge in December. I've begin with the modeling of the flask, the layout and the animation in Maya. After that I've done the Rigid Body simulation in Houdini and send the result in Realflow for the fluid simulation of the Acid. When all this steps were good, I finaly work on the smoke of the Acid with FumeFx and render all the elements in Arnold.

8 ( 0:28 - 0:31 ) : - Maya / Nparticle / Nuke

I make this shot for the school, I had to reproduce an effect in an advertising for Nissan. I used Maya Fluids to create a customised field who drive my particles. After that I meshed all the particles with the "nparticle to polygon" option of maya. This shot has give me the chance to improve my skills on particles in Maya and in the same time give me the chance to discover Maya Fluids in a simple way and the meshing in maya.

9 ( 0:31 - 0:36 ) : - 3Dsmax / FumeFx / Nuke

I saw a lot of Plume Smoke and Volcano shots on Vimeo by many Fx Artist that I really wanted to do mine. I have simulating the smoke with one big particle source and four little simple
source. I have a Grid of 490 x 527 x 775 with Wavelet Detail Scale in 1,75.

10 ( 0:36 - 0:40 ) : - Maya

This is the head of an ArtFx graduated student (Yoann Gouraud) that we have to modelized in 2,5 days during an organique modelisation's workshop.

11 ( 0:40 - 0:43 ) : - 3Dsmax / FumeFx & Pflow / After Effect

I did this shot with a tutorial of Anselm Von Seherr-Thoss ( I have learned a lot about explosion in general with this shot and how I can improve the final look with some details.

12 ( 0:43 - 0:47 ) : - Maya / Krakatoa / Nuke

This shot was my first personal shot rendering with Krakatoa, I used a test of Maya Fluids who drives nparticle for a school project and adapted it to played with Krakatoa.

13 ( 0:47 - 0:51 ) : - Maya / Mental Ray / Photoshop

The purpose of this excercice was to create a marble's photography like in CGI with the constraint of working only with procedural textures. All the CG was done in Maya, rendered in Mental Ray, composited in Photoshop and I played with Nuke for the camera mapping.

14 ( 0:51 - 0:55 ) : - Maya / Realflow / Houdini / Arnold / Krakatoa / After Effect

This shot was done for the Riot Challenge in December. I've create the layout in Maya, send it in alembic to Houdini. I worked on the Rigid Bodies in Houdini and I tried a bit of FLIP simulation but the deadline was too short and I had to finished the shot in Realflow. The Rigid simulation was render in Arnold and the fluid in Arnold and Krakatoa.

15 ( 0:55 - 0:58 ) : - 3Dsmax / FumeFx / After Effect

I did this explosion shot for an explosion's challenge in the forum, it's a french forum speciliaze in Houdini. This explosion was created with FumeFx in 3Dsmax and Pflow in emitter.
I learned a lot about how can I improve my render with this shot, I make some researched about how to render a temperature pass and use it to improve the GI on the smoke.
I did an explosion of fuel on a dirty ground so I can make a shockwave of dirt with some different colors that the main explosion.

16 ( 0:58 - 1:05) : - 3Dsmax / FumeFx / After Effect

For a school project and a friend who gives me this chalenge, I had to make a little tornado who can be contained on a box ( Like this reference video:
). I tried to create a tornado with a powerful field who can drive the smoke from the ground to the air with the great rotation like in the reference. I think that I don't really come to a good or realistic result, but I'm agreeably surprised by the way that follow the fluids.

17 ( 1:05 - 1:14) : - Photoshop

This exercice was the last Photoshop's exercice of the 2nd year in ArtFx. It's an Avatar's self portrait done in Photoshop in 2weeks.

18 ( 1:14 - 1:21 ) : - 3Dsmax / FumeFx / After Effect

This is a fire render of a fumefx simulation inspired by the following video: I really wanted to focus my work on the motion of the fire for making this as realistic as I can. I learned a lot with this shot and the works of Brandon Young, about Fire Motion and add fields like little wind and some random rotations to make this more real.
