Markus Kranzler

Germany,  Ludwigsburg Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg,  Technical Directing,  April 11, 2014
Hi,
I am Markus and I am a graduate TD from the FIlmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany.
My specialties are shading, lighting and rendering, because as I also hold a degree in mathematics I enjoy the very technical aspects, but the reason I didn't choose to work in a bank for instance is the creative satisfaction in especially those fields. For these tasks my weapon of choice became soon Pixar's RenderMan since it gave me the most technical and creative freedom spiced with some challenges of really knowing and understanding what happens under the hood.
I also have a second "love affair" which is with SideFX Houdini and its procedural workflow for effects and simulations.
I was lucky enough to complete some internships in bigger production studios in Visual Effects and character animation. Personally I am more driven towards full cg animated features rather than VFX, because I'm not just deep inside still a little kid. I enjoy mostly that >Story< is the most valued asset in those kind of productions.
To also give back to this amazing community I was a student volunteer at Siggraph for the past two years and I am teaching and giving talks regularly, because I want to share experiences and inspire students (or upcoming professionals) to help them grow.

Please enjoy and also look at the other entries.

//Natalis
VES Awards 2013 - Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project
The first Project I worked on at the Filmakademie. I did some shader development in RSL and Slim, because some parts of the film were planned to be rendered in RenderMan, but due to a lack of time one of the directors decided to solely use VRay so he could help shading and lighting.

//Spherical Harmonic Lighting
This was my Thesis work for my Masters in Mathematics. I implemented Spherical Harmonic Lighting for RenderMan Studio 3. This was prior to RenderMan ProServer 16 which also has a possibility to calculate the Spherical Harmonic coefficients (but without actual lights that can use this information).
I did this as an intern at Trixter Film in Munich.
Software used: Maya, RenderMan Studio 3, RSL, C++ Dso, python.
