Kemys Tubbs

New Zealand,  Auckland Media Design School,  Bachelor of Art & Design (Visual Effects & Computer Animation),  November 28, 2014
My name is Kemys Tubbs, I'm a recent graduate from Media Design School where I completed my Bachelor of Art & Design (Visual Effects & Computer Animation). I specialized as a Technical Director, my main areas of focus being Modelling, Texturing, Lighting and Rendering, although I also made sure to dip into other roles such as compositing and rigging in order to better understand the way studio pipelines function and how work is passed from artist to artist.

In the third and final year of my degree I was the director of a small four person team involved in creating a short, animated student film (Mister Monster) and an environmental artist for a web promo series (Shelved Stunts). When working on Shelved Stunts my roles were the modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering of the environment around the characters, as well as making sure the positioning of the props within the scene lined up to correctly interact with the characters in the scene. This role also involved scouting local parks for reference images as well as creating 360 degree HDRI panoramas for use in the lighting set up and as background plates for the compositors who I was working with.

When directing my own films as well as my final animated student film I came head-to-head with the problems that face directors in every production as well as the issues that constantly come up during moving work through the pipeline. This allowed me to learn how to efficiently deal with these problems and lead a team of artists to overcome these challenges that we all faced, and in the end I was able to broaden and improve my skills in leadership, time management and pipeline management, as well as my skill in modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering.

Throughout my degree I took on skills in a variety of different softwares such as Maya, ZBrush, Mudbox, Topogun, Mari, NukeX, Aftereffects, Photoshop and the pipeline management software Shotgun. I also was able to gain a lot of knowledge in using the Vray and MentalRay rendering engines and the render farm management software Muster from VirtualVertex. Alongside these I loved pursuing more traditional skills such as life drawing, matte painting, photography and film editing.

I'm still learning, still trying to push myself into new software and new ideas, and I hope I always will be.
