Hamish Ballingall

UK,  London Falmouth University,  Animation and VFX BA(Hons),  June 12, 2015
I am an animation and VFX student currently studying in Falmouth University. From and artistic background I developed a passion for 3D artwork and have specified an interest in FX and Modelling. I am currently working on multiple films in a variety of roles including 3D Lead, FX TD and Modeller.

I want to work for any of the top VFX companies in the world, starting as a runner or junior I will work my way up to be an FX artist creating high end effects for top feature films.

Outside of VFX I have many interests. Sport has always been a huge part of my life, recently captaining 'Redrum FC' in the Urban Rec league in Vancouver for a year, when I lived there in 2013/14. I have a huge passion for music, having played in bands through-out school, I play guitar, banjo and Pipa (a Chinese Lute I bought during a visit to China) and still play regulary and occasionally still perform.

I am 3D lead on an abstract 3D animated short called 'Illusions of Chaos' loosely based around the journey of life. My first 2 shots from my reel are from this film and are entirely done by me, except the textures.
(00:04) The 1st shot is an ncloth explosion, simulated in Maya, rendered in Mental-Ray and comped in Nuke.
(00:19) The 2nd shot is split into two (wide shot and close up) and is a combination of soft-body simulation and deformer animation done in Maya, renderd in Mental-Ray and comped in Nuke.

I am FX TD on a 3D animated short called 'Headless' which involves a scene in which a bookshop burns down.
(00:28) The 3rd shot is Maya fluids fire simulation, rendered in V-ray and comped in Nuke. The bookshop model and textures are not done by me.

I am also FX TD and compositor on a stop-motion animation called 'Distance' set in the arctic, it involves lots of snow effects.
(00:36) The 4th shot is from this short, I created a background by manipulating an existing photo in Photoshop, I green-screened and comped the animation (not done by me) with the background in Nuke. I also created snow effects using Maya particles, rendered in Mental-Ray and comped in Nuke.

(00:47) The 5th shot shows a model I created for Engine-house studios, a small company in Falmouth. They gave me the concept shown at the beginning of the shot (not done by me), so I created a base mesh in Maya and took it to Zbrush to sculpt some detail. They took my Zbrush model, made some adjustments and then used it in there animated trailer for the 'Critters Creek' theme park.

The last 2 shots shows models I created in my own time.
(00:56) The 6th shot is my Yoda model, created entirely on Zbrush.
(01:03) The 7th and final shot is a Bull I modelled entirely in Maya, from a concept called 'Electroshock' from the 'Alien Race' concept book by Scott Robertson.
