Dan Bavin

U.K,  London University of Central Lancashire,  BA Game Design,  July 16, 2015
I'm Dan and I'll be graduating in a few weeks after completing a degree in BA Game Design at the University of Central Lancashire. In the end, I specialised in 3D Environment art, though I do like to model all kinds things. The last year introduced some new challenges: Approaching a next gen style after a history of hand-painted work. Learning the new Unreal Engine 4. Adopting the Physical Based Rendering methods of texturing.

With uni coming to a close, I'm looking forward to developing my skills further, and applying for jobs as a professional environment artist.

The Observatory scene was born of a passion for machines and the Victorian era. I wanted to create something that was not too stereotypically steampunk, but would still fire up up people's curiosities. So I decided to build the big steam powered orrery the serves as the centrepiece, complete with working drive systems and engines.

Presented in Unreal Engine 4.

All assets for the Observatory were built in Maya. Textures were done in Photoshop using the Physical Based Rendering method to produce Albedo, Normal, AO, Microsurface & Metalness maps. Animations and the fly through were done in UE4, using a combination of Matinees and 'local rotation' instructions.

Most kind permission to use the images of the airships "Old Harbour" "Gloomy Morning" and "Heavenly Guardian" was given by the talented VADIM VOITEKHOVITCH, whose other works can be found here:

The portraits and other pictures in the frames are existing works of art that are old enough not to be linked to copyright law, and are credited as follows:
ALBERT BRIESTADT - Among the Sierra Nevada, Colarado; Estes Park, Colarado, Whyte's Lake; Rocky Mountain Landscape; Looking Down the Yosemite Valley
FREDRICK EDWIN CHURCH - Cotopaxi; Syria by the Sea; The River of Light
EUGENE DELECROIX - self portrait
